CVE-2012-2123
- Severity: high (CVSS 7.2 v2.0)
- Exploited in the wild: not listed in CISA KEV
- EPSS: 0.4% probability of exploitation in the next 30 days
- Public exploit or detection template: none known
- Published: 2012-05-17 · updated 2026-06-16
- Weakness: CWE-264
Description
The cap_bprm_set_creds function in security/commoncap.c in the Linux kernel before 3.3.3 does not properly handle the use of file system capabilities (aka fcaps) for implementing a privileged executable file, which allows local users to bypass intended personality restrictions via a crafted application, as demonstrated by an attack that uses a parent process to disable ASLR.
Affected products
- Linux kernel: before 3.0.29; from 3.1 before 3.2.16; from 3.3 before 3.3.3 — fixed in 3.0.29, 3.2.16, 3.3.3
How to fix
Upgrade to a fixed version: Linux kernel 3.0.29, 3.2.16, 3.3.3. Check the vendor advisory for mitigations.
