- Severity: medium (CVSS 6.1 v3.0)
- Exploited in the wild: not listed in CISA KEV
- EPSS: 0.6% probability of exploitation in the next 30 days
- Public exploit or detection template: none known
- Published: 2018-09-07 · updated 2026-06-17

Description
An issue was discovered in the Linux kernel before 4.18.6. An information leak in cdrom_ioctl_drive_status in drivers/cdrom/cdrom.c could be used by local attackers to read kernel memory because a cast from unsigned long to int interferes with bounds checking. This is similar to CVE-2018-10940.
Affected products
- Canonical Ubuntu Linux: 12.04, 14.04, 16.04, 18.04
- Debian Linux: 8.0, 9.0
- Linux kernel: before 4.18.6 — fixed in 4.18.6
How to fix
Upgrade to a fixed version: Linux kernel 4.18.6. Check the vendor advisory for mitigations.
