CVE-2021-22037
- Severity: high (CVSS 7.8 v3.1)
- Exploited in the wild: not listed in CISA KEV
- EPSS: 0.3% probability of exploitation in the next 30 days
- Public exploit or detection template: none known
- Published: 2021-10-29 · updated 2026-06-17
- Weakness: CWE-427
Description
Under certain circumstances, when manipulating the Windows registry, InstallBuilder uses the reg.exe system command. The full path to the command is not enforced, which results in a search in the search path until a binary can be identified. This makes the installer/uninstaller vulnerable to Path Interception by Search Order Hijacking, potentially allowing an attacker to plant a malicious reg.exe command so it takes precedence over the system command. The vulnerability only affects Windows installers.
Affected products
- VMware InstallBuilder: before 21.6.0 — fixed in 21.6.0
- VMware InstallBuilder: All InstallBuilder versions prior to version 21.6.0
How to fix
Upgrade to a fixed version: VMware InstallBuilder 21.6.0. Check the vendor advisory for mitigations.
