CVE-2022-1271
- Severity: high (CVSS 8.8 v3.1)
- Exploited in the wild: not listed in CISA KEV
- EPSS: 5.5% probability of exploitation in the next 30 days
- Public exploit or detection template: none known
- Published: 2022-08-31 · updated 2026-10-14
- Weakness: CWE-179
Description
An arbitrary file write vulnerability was found in GNU gzip's zgrep utility. When zgrep is applied on the attacker's chosen file name (for example, a crafted file name), this can overwrite an attacker's content to an arbitrary attacker-selected file. This flaw occurs due to insufficient validation when processing filenames with two or more newlines where selected content and the target file names are embedded in crafted multi-line file names. This flaw allows a remote, low privileged attacker to force zgrep to write arbitrary files on the system.
Affected products
- Debian Linux: 10.0
- GNU gzip: before 1.12 — fixed in 1.12
- RedHat Jboss Data Grid: 7.0.0
- tukaani-project xz: before 5.2.5 — fixed in 5.2.5
How to fix
Upgrade to a fixed version: GNU gzip 1.12; tukaani-project xz 5.2.5. Check the vendor advisory for mitigations.
