CVE-2022-2582: Exposure of unencrypted plaintext hash in github.com/aws/aws-sdk-go
- Severity: medium (CVSS 4.3 v3.1)
- Exploited in the wild: not listed in CISA KEV
- EPSS: 0.5% probability of exploitation in the next 30 days
- Public exploit or detection template: yes
- Published: 2022-12-27 · updated 2026-06-17
- Weakness: CWE-326
Description
The AWS S3 Crypto SDK sends an unencrypted hash of the plaintext alongside the ciphertext as a metadata field. This hash can be used to brute force the plaintext, if the hash is readable to the attacker. AWS now blocks this metadata field, but older SDK versions still send it.
Affected products
- aws-sdk-cpp: before 1.34.0 — fixed in 1.34.0
- Go Github.Com/Aws/Aws-Sdk-Go: before 1.34.0 — fixed in 1.34.0
How to fix
Upgrade to a fixed version: aws-sdk-cpp 1.34.0; Go Github.Com/Aws/Aws-Sdk-Go 1.34.0. Check the vendor advisory for mitigations.
