CVE-2022-35255
- Severity: critical (CVSS 9.1 v3.1)
- Exploited in the wild: not listed in CISA KEV
- EPSS: 2.1% probability of exploitation in the next 30 days
- Public exploit or detection template: yes
- Published: 2022-12-05 · updated 2026-06-17
- Weakness: CWE-338
Description
A weak randomness in WebCrypto keygen vulnerability exists in Node.js 18 due to a change with EntropySource() in SecretKeyGenTraits::DoKeyGen() in src/crypto/crypto_keygen.cc. There are two problems with this: 1) It does not check the return value, it assumes EntropySource() always succeeds, but it can (and sometimes will) fail. 2) The random data returned byEntropySource() may not be cryptographically strong and therefore not suitable as keying material.
Affected products
- Debian Linux: 11.0
- Node.js: from 15.0.0 through 15.14.0; from 16.0.0 through 16.12.0; from 16.13.0 before 16.17.1; from 18.0.0 before 18.9.1 — fixed in 16.17.1, 18.9.1
- Siemens SINEC INS: before 1.0; 1.0, 1.0-sp1, 1.0-sp2 — fixed in 1.0
How to fix
Upgrade to a fixed version: Node.js 16.17.1, 18.9.1; Siemens SINEC INS 1.0. Check the vendor advisory for mitigations.
