CVE-2022-43552
- Severity: medium (CVSS 5.9 v3.1)
- Exploited in the wild: not listed in CISA KEV
- EPSS: 2.7% probability of exploitation in the next 30 days
- Public exploit or detection template: yes
- Published: 2023-02-09 · updated 2026-10-23
- Weakness: CWE-416
Description
A use after free vulnerability exists in curl <7.87.0. Curl can be asked to *tunnel* virtually all protocols it supports through an HTTP proxy. HTTP proxies can (and often do) deny such tunnel operations. When getting denied to tunnel the specific protocols SMB or TELNET, curl would use a heap-allocated struct after it had been freed, in its transfer shutdown code path.
Affected products
- Apple macOS: from 13.0 before 13.3 — fixed in 13.3
- curl: before 7.87.0 — fixed in 7.87.0
- Splunk Universal Forwarder: from 8.2.0 before 8.2.12; from 9.0.0 before 9.0.6; 9.1.0 — fixed in 8.2.12, 9.0.6
How to fix
Upgrade to a fixed version: Apple macOS 13.3; curl 7.87.0; Splunk Universal Forwarder 8.2.12, 9.0.6. Check the vendor advisory for mitigations.
