CVE-2023-23005
- Severity: medium (CVSS 5.5 v3.1)
- Exploited in the wild: not listed in CISA KEV
- EPSS: 0.3% probability of exploitation in the next 30 days
- Public exploit or detection template: none known
- Published: 2023-03-01 · updated 2026-06-17
- Weakness: CWE-476
Description
In the Linux kernel before 6.2, mm/memory-tiers.c misinterprets the alloc_memory_type return value (expects it to be NULL in the error case, whereas it is actually an error pointer). NOTE: this is disputed by third parties because there are no realistic cases in which a user can cause the alloc_memory_type error case to be reached.
Affected products
- Linux kernel: before 6.2 — fixed in 6.2
- SUSE Linux Enterprise Server: 15-sp5
How to fix
Upgrade to a fixed version: Linux kernel 6.2. Check the vendor advisory for mitigations.
