- Severity: medium (CVSS 6.5 v3.1)
- Exploited in the wild: not listed in CISA KEV
- EPSS: 2.8% probability of exploitation in the next 30 days
- Public exploit or detection template: none known
- Published: 2023-08-07 · updated 2026-06-17
- Weakness: CWE-824
Description
lib/kadm5/kadm_rpc_xdr.c in MIT Kerberos 5 (aka krb5) before 1.20.2 and 1.21.x before 1.21.1 frees an uninitialized pointer. A remote authenticated user can trigger a kadmind crash. This occurs because _xdr_kadm5_principal_ent_rec does not validate the relationship between n_key_data and the key_data array count.
Affected products
- Debian Linux: 10.0
- MIT Kerberos 5: before 1.20.2; 1.21, 1.21-beta1 — fixed in 1.20.2
- Active IQ Unified Manager for VMware vSphere, Linux, and Microsoft Windows: all versions
- Clustered Data ONTAP: 9.0
- NetApp Hci: all versions
- NetApp Management Services For Element Software: all versions
- NetApp Ontap Tools: all versions
How to fix
Upgrade to a fixed version: MIT Kerberos 5 1.20.2. Check the vendor advisory for mitigations.
