CVE-2023-39323: Arbitrary code execution during build via line directives in cmd/go
- Severity: high (CVSS 8.1 v3.1)
- Exploited in the wild: not listed in CISA KEV
- EPSS: 1.9% probability of exploitation in the next 30 days
- Public exploit or detection template: none known
- Published: 2023-10-05 · updated 2026-06-17
Description
Line directives ("//line") can be used to bypass the restrictions on "//go:cgo_" directives, allowing blocked linker and compiler flags to be passed during compilation. This can result in unexpected execution of arbitrary code when running "go build". The line directive requires the absolute path of the file in which the directive lives, which makes exploiting this issue significantly more complex.
Affected products
- Fedoraproject Fedora: 37, 38, 39
- Go: before 1.20.9; from 1.21.0 before 1.21.2 — fixed in 1.20.9, 1.21.2
How to fix
Upgrade to a fixed version: Go 1.20.9, 1.21.2. Check the vendor advisory for mitigations.
