CVE-2023-43669: Tungstenite allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service
- Severity: high (CVSS 7.5 v3.1)
- Exploited in the wild: not listed in CISA KEV
- EPSS: 2.1% probability of exploitation in the next 30 days
- Public exploit or detection template: yes
- Published: 2023-09-21 · updated 2026-06-17
Description
The Tungstenite crate before 0.20.1 for Rust allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (minutes of CPU consumption) via an excessive length of an HTTP header in a client handshake. The length affects both how many times a parse is attempted (e.g., thousands of times) and the average amount of data for each parse attempt (e.g., millions of bytes).
Affected products
- Fedoraproject Fedora: 37, 38, 39
- Snapview Tungstenite: through 0.20.0
- Crates.Io Tungstenite: from 0.0.0-0 before 0.20.1 — fixed in 0.20.1
How to fix
Upgrade to a fixed version: Crates.Io Tungstenite 0.20.1. Check the vendor advisory for mitigations.
