CVE-2023-51766
- Severity: medium (CVSS 5.3 v3.1)
- Exploited in the wild: not listed in CISA KEV
- EPSS: 1.1% probability of exploitation in the next 30 days
- Public exploit or detection template: yes
- Published: 2023-12-24 · updated 2026-06-17
- Weakness: CWE-345
Description
Exim before 4.97.1 allows SMTP smuggling in certain PIPELINING/CHUNKING configurations. Remote attackers can use a published exploitation technique to inject e-mail messages with a spoofed MAIL FROM address, allowing bypass of an SPF protection mechanism. This occurs because Exim supports <LF>.<CR><LF> but some other popular e-mail servers do not.
Affected products
- Debian Linux: 10.0
- Exim: before 4.97.1 — fixed in 4.97.1
- Fedoraproject Extra Packages For Enterprise Linux: 7.0, 8.0, 9.0
- Fedoraproject Fedora: 38, 39
How to fix
Upgrade to a fixed version: Exim 4.97.1. Check the vendor advisory for mitigations.
