CVE-2023-6270: Kernel: aoe: improper reference count leads to use-after-free vulnerability
- Severity: high (CVSS 7.0 v3.1)
- Exploited in the wild: not listed in CISA KEV
- EPSS: 0.4% probability of exploitation in the next 30 days
- Public exploit or detection template: none known
- Published: 2024-01-04 · updated 2026-10-29
- Weakness: CWE-416
Description
A flaw was found in the ATA over Ethernet (AoE) driver in the Linux kernel. The aoecmd_cfg_pkts() function improperly updates the refcnt on `struct net_device`, and a use-after-free can be triggered by racing between the free on the struct and the access through the `skbtxq` global queue. This could lead to a denial of service condition or potential code execution.
Affected products
- Debian Linux: 10.0
- Fedoraproject Fedora: 39
- Linux kernel: before 6.9 — fixed in 6.9
How to fix
Upgrade to a fixed version: Linux kernel 6.9. Check the vendor advisory for mitigations.
