CVE-2024-0562: Kernel: use-after-free after removing device in wb_inode_writeback_end in mm/page-writeback.c
- Severity: high (CVSS 7.8 v3.1)
- Exploited in the wild: not listed in CISA KEV
- EPSS: 0.3% probability of exploitation in the next 30 days
- Public exploit or detection template: none known
- Published: 2024-01-15 · updated 2026-06-17
- Weakness: CWE-416
Description
A use-after-free flaw was found in the Linux Kernel. When a disk is removed, bdi_unregister is called to stop further write-back and waits for associated delayed work to complete. However, wb_inode_writeback_end() may schedule bandwidth estimation work after this has completed, which can result in the timer attempting to access the recently freed bdi_writeback.
Affected products
- Linux kernel: from 5.15 before 5.15.164; from 5.16 before 5.19.6; 6.0-rc1, 6.0-rc2 — fixed in 5.15.164, 5.19.6
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux: 8.0, 9.0
How to fix
Upgrade to a fixed version: Linux kernel 5.15.164, 5.19.6. Check the vendor advisory for mitigations.
