CVE-2024-44996: vsock: fix recursive ->recvmsg calls
- Severity: medium (CVSS 5.5 v3.1)
- Exploited in the wild: not listed in CISA KEV
- EPSS: 0.2% probability of exploitation in the next 30 days
- Public exploit or detection template: none known
- Published: 2024-09-04 · updated 2026-06-17
- Weakness: CWE-674
Description
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: vsock: fix recursive ->recvmsg calls After a vsock socket has been added to a BPF sockmap, its prot->recvmsg has been replaced with vsock_bpf_recvmsg(). Thus the following recursiion could happen: vsock_bpf_recvmsg() -> __vsock_recvmsg() -> vsock_connectible_recvmsg() -> prot->recvmsg() -> vsock_bpf_recvmsg() again We need to fix it by calling the original ->recvmsg() without any BPF sockmap logic in __vsock_recvmsg().
Affected products
- Linux kernel: from 6.4 before 6.6.48; from 6.7 before 6.10.7; 6.11-rc1, 6.11-rc2, 6.11-rc3 — fixed in 6.10.7, 6.6.48
How to fix
Upgrade to a fixed version: Linux kernel 6.10.7, 6.6.48. Check the vendor advisory for mitigations.
