- Severity: high (CVSS 7.5 v3.1)
- Exploited in the wild: not listed in CISA KEV
- EPSS: 1.6% probability of exploitation in the next 30 days
- Public exploit or detection template: none known
- Published: 2024-08-08 · updated 2026-06-17
- Weakness: CWE-367
Description
Time-of-check Time-of-use (TOCTOU) race condition in pg_dump in PostgreSQL allows an object creator to execute arbitrary SQL functions as the user running pg_dump, which is often a superuser. The attack involves replacing another relation type with a view or foreign table. The attack requires waiting for pg_dump to start, but winning the race condition is trivial if the attacker retains an open transaction. Versions before PostgreSQL 16.4, 15.8, 14.13, 13.16, and 12.20 are affected.
Affected products
- PostgreSQL: from 12.0 before 12.20; from 13.0 before 13.16; from 14.0 before 14.13; from 15.0 before 15.8; from 16.0 before 16.4 — fixed in 12.20, 13.16, 14.13, 15.8, 16.4
How to fix
Upgrade to a fixed version: PostgreSQL 12.20, 13.16, 14.13, 15.8. Check the vendor advisory for mitigations.
