CVE-2024-7592: Quadratic complexity parsing cookies with backslashes
- Severity: high (CVSS 7.5 v3.1)
- Exploited in the wild: not listed in CISA KEV
- EPSS: 2.3% probability of exploitation in the next 30 days
- Public exploit or detection template: yes
- Published: 2024-08-19 · updated 2026-06-17
- Weakness: CWE-400
Description
There is a LOW severity vulnerability affecting CPython, specifically the 'http.cookies' standard library module. When parsing cookies that contained backslashes for quoted characters in the cookie value, the parser would use an algorithm with quadratic complexity, resulting in excess CPU resources being used while parsing the value.
Affected products
- Python: before 3.8.20; from 3.9.0 before 3.9.20; from 3.10.0 before 3.10.15; from 3.11.0 before 3.11.10; from 3.12.0 before 3.12.6; 3.13.0-alpha0, 3.13.0-alpha1, 3.13.0-alpha2, 3.13.0-alpha3, 3.13.0-alpha4, 3.13.0-alpha5 (+6) — fixed in 3.10.15, 3.11.10, 3.12.6, 3.8.20, 3.9.20
