CVE-2024-7730: Qemu-kvm: virtio-snd: heap buffer overflow in virtio_snd_pcm_in_cb()
- Severity: high (CVSS 7.8 v3.1)
- Exploited in the wild: not listed in CISA KEV
- EPSS: 0.3% probability of exploitation in the next 30 days
- Public exploit or detection template: none known
- Published: 2024-11-14 · updated 2026-06-17
- Weakness: CWE-122
Description
A heap buffer overflow was found in the virtio-snd device in QEMU. When reading input audio in the virtio-snd input callback, virtio_snd_pcm_in_cb, the function did not check whether the iov can fit the data buffer. This issue can trigger an out-of-bounds write if the size of the virtio queue element is equal to virtio_snd_pcm_status, which makes the available space for audio data zero.
Affected products
- QEMU: before 9.1.0 — fixed in 9.1.0
How to fix
Upgrade to a fixed version: QEMU 9.1.0. Check the vendor advisory for mitigations.
