CVE-2025-1716: picklescan - Security scanning bypass via 'pip main'
- Severity: critical (CVSS 9.8 v3.1)
- Exploited in the wild: not listed in CISA KEV
- EPSS: 1.7% probability of exploitation in the next 30 days
- Public exploit or detection template: yes
- Published: 2025-02-26 · updated 2026-06-17
- Weakness: CWE-184
Description
picklescan before 0.0.21 does not treat 'pip' as an unsafe global. An attacker could craft a malicious model that uses Pickle to pull in a malicious PyPI package (hosted, for example, on pypi.org or GitHub) via `pip.main()`. Because pip is not a restricted global, the model, when scanned with picklescan, would pass security checks and appear to be safe, when it could instead prove to be problematic.
Affected products
- picklescan: before 0.0.22 — fixed in 0.0.22
How to fix
Upgrade to a fixed version: picklescan 0.0.22. Check the vendor advisory for mitigations.
