CVE-2025-50181: urllib3 redirects are not disabled when retries are disabled on PoolManager instantiation
- Severity: medium (CVSS 6.1 v3.1)
- Exploited in the wild: not listed in CISA KEV
- EPSS: 0.5% probability of exploitation in the next 30 days
- Public exploit or detection template: yes
- Published: 2025-06-19 · updated 2026-06-17
- Weakness: CWE-601
Description
urllib3 is a user-friendly HTTP client library for Python. Prior to 2.5.0, it is possible to disable redirects for all requests by instantiating a PoolManager and specifying retries in a way that disable redirects. By default, requests and botocore users are not affected. An application attempting to mitigate SSRF or open redirect vulnerabilities by disabling redirects at the PoolManager level will remain vulnerable. This issue has been patched in version 2.5.0.
Affected products
- urllib3: before 2.5.0 — fixed in 2.5.0
- Pypi Urllib3: before 2.5.0; 0.2, 0.3, 0.3.1, 0.4.0, 0.4.1, 1.0 (+96) — fixed in 2.5.0
How to fix
Upgrade to a fixed version: urllib3 2.5.0; Pypi Urllib3 2.5.0. Check the vendor advisory for mitigations.
