CVE-2026-112892: Pillow: MSP RLE decoder expands a tiny file into unbounded memory
- Severity: high (CVSS 7.5 v3.1)
- Exploited in the wild: not listed in CISA KEV
- EPSS: 0.4% probability of exploitation in the next 30 days
- Public exploit or detection template: none known
- Published: 2026-10-19 · updated 2026-10-27
- Weakness: CWE-409
Description
Pillow is a Python imaging library. From 4.1.0 until 13.0.0, Pillow's MSP RLE decoder can expand a small file into an unbounded in-memory buffer. The decoder writes run-length output to BytesIO without limiting expansion to the declared image size. An attacker can supply a crafted MSP image to an application that loads its pixels. This can exhaust memory and deny service even when the declared pixel count passes the decompression-bomb check. This issue is fixed in version 13.0.0.
Affected products
- python-pillow Pillow: from 4.1.0 before 13.0.0 — fixed in 13.0.0
- Pypi Pillow: from 4.1.0 before 13.0.0; 10.0.0, 10.0.1, 10.1.0, 10.2.0, 10.3.0, 10.4.0 (+49) — fixed in 13.0.0
- python-pillow Pillow: from 4.1.0, < 13.0.0
How to fix
Upgrade to a fixed version: python-pillow Pillow 13.0.0; Pypi Pillow 13.0.0. Check the vendor advisory for mitigations.
