CVE-2026-18313: rpcapd memory leak in libpcap before 1.10.7
- Severity: medium (CVSS 4.3 v3.1)
- Exploited in the wild: not listed in CISA KEV
- EPSS: 0.2% probability of exploitation in the next 30 days
- Public exploit or detection template: none known
- Published: 2026-09-05 · updated 2026-09-08
- Weakness: CWE-401
Description
rpcapd can allocate up to 65536 bytes per each RPCAP_MSG_UPDATEFILTER_REQ or RPCAP_MSG_STARTCAP_REQ message received from the client, but it never frees the memory, so it leaks memory even under normal use. A malicious client can cause the server to leak memory substantially faster.
Affected products
- The Tcpdump Group libpcap: from 1.10.x before 1.10.7; 1.9.x — fixed in 1.10.7
How to fix
Upgrade to a fixed version: The Tcpdump Group libpcap 1.10.7. Check the vendor advisory for mitigations.
