- Severity: medium (CVSS 5.5 v3.1)
- Exploited in the wild: not listed in CISA KEV
- EPSS: 0.3% probability of exploitation in the next 30 days

Description
node-tar is a full-featured Tar for Node.js. Prior to version 7.5.11, tar (npm) can be tricked into creating a symlink that points outside the extraction directory by using a drive-relative symlink target such as C:../../../target.txt, which enables file overwrite outside cwd during normal tar.x() extraction. This vulnerability is fixed in 7.5.11.
Affected products
- isaacs node-tar: before 7.5.11 — fixed in 7.5.11
- Npm Tar: before 7.5.11 — fixed in 7.5.11
How to fix
Upgrade to a fixed version: isaacs node-tar 7.5.11; Npm Tar 7.5.11. Check the vendor advisory for mitigations.
