CVE-2026-46599: Excessive resource consumption in PackBits decompression in golang.org/x/image/tiff
- Severity: high (CVSS 7.5 v3.1)
- Exploited in the wild: not listed in CISA KEV
- EPSS: 0.4% probability of exploitation in the next 30 days
- Public exploit or detection template: none known
- Published: 2026-05-29 · updated 2026-07-22
- Weakness: CWE-770
Description
The TIFF decoder does not place a limit on the size of PackBits-compressed data. A maliciously-crafted image can exploit this to cause a small image (both in terms of pixel width/height and encoded size) to make the decoder decode large amounts of compressed data.
Affected products
- golang.org/x/image/tiff: before 0.41.0 — fixed in 0.41.0
How to fix
Upgrade to a fixed version: golang.org/x/image/tiff 0.41.0. Check the vendor advisory for mitigations.
