CVE-2026-50045: 'max-global-quota' reset by DNSSEC validation restarts
- Severity: medium (CVSS 5.3 v3.1)
- Exploited in the wild: not listed in CISA KEV
- EPSS: 0.5% probability of exploitation in the next 30 days
- Public exploit or detection template: none known
- Published: 2026-07-22 · updated 2026-10-24
- Weakness: CWE-406
Description
In NLnet Labs Unbound 1.22.0 up to and including 1.25.1, a single client query for a deeply nested name under a DNSSEC-signed parent can cause Unbound to send more upstream packets per client query than the configured 'max-global-quota'. This effectively bypasses a security configuration that limits upstream amplification traffic.
Affected products
- NLnet Labs Unbound: from 1.22.0 before 1.25.2 — fixed in 1.25.2
How to fix
Upgrade to a fixed version: NLnet Labs Unbound 1.25.2. Check the vendor advisory for mitigations.
