CVE-2026-93764: Plaintext storage of encrypted fields via skipped embedded models in encryption schema generation
- Severity: medium (CVSS 6.5 v3.1)
- Exploited in the wild: not listed in CISA KEV
- EPSS: 0.1% probability of exploitation in the next 30 days
- Public exploit or detection template: none known
- Published: 2026-09-18 · updated 2026-09-24
- Weakness: CWE-312
Description
Mongoid may omit encryption rules for fields declared on embedded models when generating the client-side field-level encryption schema. Applications that enable this feature can therefore store values intended to be encrypted in readable form, with no error or warning. A party with routine read access to the database, a backup, or the underlying data files may then see data that was meant to remain unreadable outside the application.
Affected products
- MongoDB Inc. Mongoid: from 9.0.0 before 9.0.12; 9.1.0 — fixed in 9.0.12
How to fix
Upgrade to a fixed version: MongoDB Inc. Mongoid 9.0.12. Check the vendor advisory for mitigations.
